LONG TRADITION IN BUSINESS

Murphy’s Menswear has a very long tradition of serving the people of Newcastle West and West Limerick and has been doing so in the same place for 120 years.

Declan Murphy, who took over the runrung of the business 18 months ago is the fourth generation of the family at the helm, having assumed control on the retirement of his father Michael.

Murphy’s Menswear is a story of success and sustainability and has been predicated by successive generations of the family on good practice and providing customers with the widest possible choice and the best possible value.

The mission of the outlet is the same today in this competitive world as it was all those years ago at the end of the nineteenth century.

Murphy’s Menswear was established in 1889 by Michael Murphy, great grandfather of the present proprietor Declan. At the time he opened two shops in the town and retained them until his death in 1922. On his death, his son Paddy took over the present business while his brother and sister

Paddy continued to run the business until his retirement in 1963, handing over to his son Michael who had joined the business in 1953. Paddy Murphy died in 1967.

Michael continued at the helm for 46 years before handing over to his son Declan eighteen months ago. Murphy’s Menswear Which at all times has been owner run, now boasts a century and a quarter in the trade.
