GREAT SPORTING TRADITION

Successive generations of the Murphy family have a long association with sport, especially the G.A.A. rugby and golf.

In 1922 Michael Murphy was coach of the Newcastle West senior hurling team, the captain of which was Willie Hough who had previously led Limerick to All-Ireland glory in 1918.

Michael died unexpectedly at a match in Adare between Croom and Newcastle West.

Paddy Murphy was a keen G.A.A. and rugby enthusiast and was capjaih of Newcastle West Golf Club in 1951. His son Michael also captained the golf club, in 1971, as well as playing G.A.A. locally and rugby for Newcastle West and Garryowen.

Current propnetor Declan played rugby for Newcastle West for a number of years as well as Dublin club Lansdowne and while in Australia with Gordon in North Sydney. Declan is also a keen golfer and has completed three maratlions.
